A resource for Managing Up and Dealing with a Challenging Boss

I don’t know about you but for me (and lot of people) some of the most challenging aspects of my career have been dealing with bosses that I didn’t love. I’ve had all sorts of flavors of a boss and unfortunately have only really liked one of them. The rest were either meh or someone that I really struggled with.

Can you relate? If you are within the 50% of the population that has left a job because of a manager, you probably can.

When you have a challenging manager it can feel hopeless at times. Even when you raise an issue or give feedback, you are expected to just grin & bare, “make the best of it” and treat it as an opportunity to learn. Sometimes that works and other times it becomes unbearable.

While there are a lot of trainings on being an effective leader, I have personally found a real lack of resources for how to cope effectively with a bad manager.

I know I am not alone because it’s something I discuss often with friends and clients.

If you are struggling with your current manager, I wanted to share a resource with you that I hope will help. I wish I had found this book earlier in my career and wanted to share it with you all in case it’s helpful for you.

I know from personal experience how a toxic manager can impact your mental and emotional health and how frustrating it can be told to just figure out how to work with them without knowing how.

I recently read the book “Managing Up” by Mary Abbajay. What I love about the book is it gives tips on how to identify what type of manager you have, what are the drivers of their behavior and ways to successfully manage up to them.

Regardless of what type of manager you have, I hope this resource helps you find ways to manage up successfully and if you are unsatisfied in your job, find ways to make your life easier.

Happy Reading and good luck with your manager! I hope this helps brings you greater peace and provides some tools to get back to a happier place in your job.
